Melissa Hoskins began cycling after being picked up as a part of the WAIS Talent Identification Program at the age of 15 and within three years had become an Australian Champion. Hoskins' first national title came in 2008 in the team pursuit, an event she has now successfully defended every year since. She went on to win the U/19 2009 Junior World Championship title, breaking the world record in the process in Moscow. She was a part of the Australian team that won bronze at the World Cup in Beijing in 2011. Hoskins and Olympic teammates Annette Edmondson and Josephine Tomic broke the world record in the semi-final of the 2012 Track World Championships. The record only lasted a few minutes as the British team broke the new record in their semi-final before going on to beat Australia in the final. Continuing to compete in road events also, Hoskins finsished the 2012 Jayco Bay Classic 1st overall and took out the U/23 Australian Road Championships.
