Matildas Starting XI According to Twitter

Twitter can do all sorts of things like pick Oscar winners and predict the outcomes of revolutions. But does it know anything about football?

Just for fun, I thought I'd take a look at what the Matildas squad would look like for this Sunday's game against New Zealand if the team members were picked solely on how popular they are on Twitter.

And yes, I ignored all common sense things like positions, availability, injury, pregnancy and retirement:

Starting Eleven

It's fitting that the wearer of the #1 jersey and the captain's armband should also win the Twitter popularity contest. Congrats Melissa Barbieri! Always willing to stand up for her team and her sport, she's well worth the follow for her insights in to the game and... cooking?!

The rest of the team:

Tom Sermanni chose a squad of 23 and so did I. Here are the players that make up the numbers:

Left Right Out

I really don't want to name names but here's the full list of current and past Matildas on Twitter including the ones that didn't make the Twitter team. Head over and follow them.

Get to the Game!

See the Westfield Matildas take on the New Zealand Football Ferns at WIN Stadium, Sunday 24 June 2012.

The match will also act as a double header with local Football South Coast champions Illawarra Stingrays playing as a curtain raiser prior to the main game.

The Illawarra Stingrays match will kick off at 1pm prior to the 3pm kick off for the Westfield Matildas v New Zealand match.
