Sport for Women Ambassadors Selected in Matildas

Matildas coach Tom Sermanni has selected a 20 player strong squad for this month's US tour. The tour will see the Matildas take on the gold medal winning United States Women's National Team in a two game series and World No 58 Haiti in a one off match.

“Two matches against the world’s top team on their home soil is a daunting challenge to say the least, but it’s the sort of test that will help us in the long-term,” Sermanni said.

“These games are part of celebration tour by the USA after winning Gold in London, so our job is to spoil the party if we can.”

The squad has seen the retention of many of the up and coming national team members including Melbourne trio Brianna Davey, Stephanie Catley and Ashley Brown, Brisbane striker Emily Gielnik and Sydney FC midfielder Alanna Kennedy.

While Sermanni has also recalled several established Matildas including vice-captain Collette McCallum, Clare Polkinghorne, the electric Lisa De Vanna and Samantha Kerr as well as the W-League all-time leading scorer and Sport for Women Ambassador, Michelle Heyman. For Kerr it’s a welcome return to the national team after a 12 month absence from a knee injury.

Other Sport for Women Ambassadors selected include Sarah Walsh, Laura Alleway and Emily Van Egmond.

For a majority of the squad it will be the first time they will match up against a the highly ranked US team that boasts many of the sports superstars.

"It is extremely important that we continue to play these big teams." said defender Servet Uzunlar.

"It is fantastic and we are very fortunate to play them. It helps us to play them as you then realise what needs to be done to get to that level."

Meanwhile for veteran Sarah Walsh it will be a bittersweet experience with the tour marking her final matches with the national team following the 30 year old's recent retirement from international football.
