BMX world champion Caroline Buchanan has made the shift to mountain bike for the interim
Canberra speed demon Caroline Buchanan has one shot left at achieving her goal of representing Australia at the mountain bike downhill world championships in South Africa in August.
Caroline Buchanan will be aiming to continue her unbeaten form in 2013 when she competes in the women’s downhill championships at the 2013 Subaru Mountain Bike Australian Championships in Canberra February 20 – 24.
The last time Caroline Buchanan roared down Mount Stromlo she burst into tears in front of more than 10,000 fans and secured international glory. Three years on and the crowd will be smaller, but the race just as significant as the Olympian continues her bid to make an impact on the mountain bike downhill scene.
Greatest sporting achievement: 2 time Mountain Bike World Champion
Greatest achievement off the field: Finalist in the young Australian Of The Year Awards
Who is your sporting heroine? Layne Beachley 7 times World Surfing champion
How many hours per week to you train/exercise? 8-20 hours a week roughly 2 hours per session and 1 hour for recovery sessions is a typical week.
What kind of diet or nutrition plan are you on? PowerBar and the ACT Academy Of Sport all help me with my nutrition. I have never been on a diet I am trying to put on size and muscle so I am always making sure that I eat healthy and that I never have a calorie deficit.
What do you love about your sport? I love that I can travel the world and it is always a great thing winning a race but what is the greatest feeling is winning whilst overcoming odds. Rising to the challenge and surprising myself with my abilities.
If you could change something about your sport, what would it be? Female recognition and support: Not getting the recognition that elite athletes in other sports get, and not getting the recognition that men in BMX and mountain biking at the same level get. The mountain bike industry/market is European based and for BMX it is all about America so being Australian it is very hard to get the major $/product support. I have the same traveling expenses and the same training expenses as the guys but the prize money is nowhere near the same and most sponsors want the guys.
What motivates you? Rising to a challenge and achieving it!
Do you have a profession outside of your sport? Full time athlete
Three words that describe you: Caring, competitive, determined
If I wanted to play your sport, what advice would you give me? Extreme sports are intimidating at first so... Put on some body armor and a helmet and just give it a go. I'm sure that you will fall in love with it too.
I'm nominating Caroline because she is an outstanding athlete, and now Olympian. She has achieved world champion level in BMX and Mountain Biking, but offers her support back to the community through charity work and training camps. She is always having t
